Pakistani boxer Abida Batool has won the Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) world atomweight title, becoming the first Pakistani woman to win the belt.
Abida stopped Thailand’s Wandee Sinongkhrot in the fifth round of their eight-round fight in Pattaya, Thailand. The bout was part of the Brave Hearts boxing event.
Abida was the first Pakistani woman to compete for the WIBA world title and the win was her second international professional fight.
She started boxing in 2018 and has won Pakistan’s national professional boxing title. She has also fought for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Asia female atomweight title in Bangkok, where Thailand’s Wisuta Sririttidet beat her by unanimous decision.
She faced financial problems and resistance from her family in the early days, but she kept going.
After the win, Abida thanked her family, her sponsors, her coach and the people of Pakistan for supporting her.
