The Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) has sealed Ibne Hassan Hospital in Malir after an infant tested positive for mpox, with health authorities reporting that he contracted the infection after circumcision using contaminated scissors.
The commission acted after receiving a report from the district health officer (DHO) about the laboratory-confirmed case. The hospital is located in Malir 15, within the jurisdiction of Saudabad police station.
In a statement, the SHCC said that the hospital had poor hygiene, inadequate infection prevention and control measures, and reported malpractices that raised concerns about patient safety and public health.
“The baby’s swab sample tested positive at a Dow laboratory,” the statement said, adding that SHCC officials took action with support from the DHO Korangi and the senior superintendent of police (SSP).
The commission stated that the hospital was operating illegally and was being run by unqualified staff and quacks.
SHCC officials also faced resistance while carrying out their duties at the facility, according to the statement. The team sought assistance from Korangi police, who helped bring the situation under control before officials sealed the hospital.
The infant is receiving treatment at the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital and Research Centre (SIDH&RC), where he was taken after developing symptoms of the infection.
Last week, a senior doctor said that the 40-day-old boy had developed a fever and rashes across his body. His parents first took him to a private hospital, which referred him to SIDH&RC for treatment.
